Ross Charnock is Maître de Conférences in the University of Paris-9, specialising in the language of the law.

After a first degree in music history in Exeter, UK, with Prof. Arthur Hutchings, he took his doctorate in linguistic pragmatics in Paris during the early 80s, under Prof. Oswald Ducrot. Now Maître de Conférences at the University of Paris 9, he specialises in the linguistics of the common law, publishing mainly on argumentation and semantics in common law judgments. As part of this research project, he has developed a specialised linguistic corpus of over 30 million words, consisting of historically significant English and American legal judgments and opinions in different fields of law, from the 16th century to the present. He also has research interests in pragmatics as applied to specialised language teaching and testing.

 

As a young violist, he regularly attended summer classes with Bruno Giuranna in Siena and Prussia Cove. He continues to publish regularly on classical music for strings.

Après des études en histoire de la musique à l’Université d’Exeter avec le prof. Arthur Hutchings, il passe son doctorat à Paris, en linguistique générale, avec le prof. Oswald Ducrot. Actuellement MCF à l’Université Paris-9, il est spécialiste de la sémantique et l’argumentation dans les arrêts de la ‘common law’ Son projet de recherche s’appuie sur un corpus unique de plus de 30 millions de mots, constitué des grands arrêts anglais et américains dans les différents domaines du doit, à partir du 16e siècle. Il s’intéresse aussi à la pragmatique appliquée à l’enseignement des langues de spécialité et à l’évaluation.

En tant qu’altiste, il assistait régulièrement à des stages d’été avec Bruno Giuranna à Sienne et à Prussia Cove. Il continue de publier régulièrement sur la musique classique pour cordes.
